NASA Coins Re-Issue on Anniversary of Historic Apollo Missions

HST Discovery

Santa Monica, CA (PRWEB) July 23, 2009

Discovery Collectibles has re-issued a series of NASA approved designs following strong demand that sold out the original ten challenge coin collectible series within weeks of its first release in late 2007. The collection, the HST Discovery Series, was created to commemorate the final years and historic accomplishments of the Hubble Space Telescope.

The HST Discovery Series re-issue was minted at the oldest continuously operating private Mint in the United States and designed by Saltus Award winning medalist Alex Shagin (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alex_Shagin). Shagin’s works can be found in museums and private collections around the world, including the Hermitage Museum, the Smithsonian Institution, Yad Vashem Museum, the British Museum and the Swedish Royal Medallic Collection.

The artistic pedigree of the HST Discovery Series is rooted in Russian born Shagin’s passion for the Apollo space program where he also designed coins for the first joint flight of the U.S. and Soviet space programs called Apollo-Soyuz in July 1975.

Unlike coins proposed by the NASA 50th Anniversary Commemorative Coin Act: H.R. 6455, these non-currency commemoratives are available now and targeted to the space enthusiast and the general collector alike.

All ten designs in the HST Discovery Series re-issue were hand etched by Mr. Shagin without the aid of computers or 3D imaging, a technique rarely used in today’s coin designs. Each coin represents a view of the planets and our sun as if viewed through the eyes of the Hubble Telescope. The collection also includes a Pluto design; the only commemorative coin currently minted with the NASA insignia that recognizes both the discovery and de-commission of that planet.

Discovery Collectibles has also announced a deal with the Home Shopping Network to offer a special edition of the series that includes new artwork on each design by Alex Shagin with colored accents of pure silver and gold.

The re-issue HST Discovery collection became available on July 21, 2009 at http://www.nasacoins.com on the anniversary of the Apollo 11 astronauts journey back from the Moon. Each coin includes the official NASA insignia on the reverse as well as a hand-signed certificate of authenticity by Alex Shagin and a stand-up map display with original NASA artwork.

Aw, this was a really great post. In theory I’d like to write like this also – taking time and real effort to make a good article… but what can I say… I procrastinate alot and never seem to get something done.
